I'll be a freshman this fall, and I may be interested in majoring in Public & Community Service, and I was wondering if anyone had anything to tell me about it?

I'm going in Undeclared as of now, but I'm decently positive I'm going to switch to that.

Thank you :]

Boston College Speaker Series [Sep. 27th, 2005|06:26 pm]
Providence College

Are you interested in race issues in higher education? Come see Sarah Willie next Thursday at Boston College!

Sarah Willie, scholar, associate professor of sociology, and chair of the Black Studies Program at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore Pennsylvania, has studied the experience of black students in college. She wrote about this research in her book Acting Black: College Identity and the Performance of Race (Routledge 2003). Willie states that “Racism and discrimination continue to exist, though often in more subtle ways than a generation ago” and believes that there is a threshold of about 15% non-white enrollment that improves the campus experience of blacks (Boston College is reported to have 21% AHANA enrollment). Not meeting this threshold is not only difficult for blacks but also is detrimental for the experience of whites: “Without affirmative action, colleges and universities in most states will not be able to achieve a critical mass of students of color, that could mean not just a more alienating experience for students of color, but a limited college experience for majority students as well.”

Please join us for this FREE event, with FREE goodies provided by Trader Joes and Starbucks.

Dear LiveJournalers,

My name is Pricilla Sibuvel. I have been fundraising in the walk for farm animals for four years.

The walk will be at Slater Memorial Park in Rhode Island, on October 1st 2005!

You do not have to live in RI to participate, there aren't a lot of walks areound, so anyone who can be here (Mass, Conneticut or anywhere) is welcome to join us!

Every year Farm Sanctuary hosts the walk for farm animals. People collect pledges (one set pledge rather than most per mile pledges). The money goes to rescuing abused and otherwise tortured animals. Walkers collect prizes and have a good time!

In 2004 forty cities hosted walks, with over 1,500 people taking to the streets with a message of compassion. Earning over 100,000 dollars.

I have participated in the phoenix walk for four years and last year our walk ranked second as the most succesful walk.

We want to make Rhode Island that walk this year!

We are planning on getting some media, local news and possibly the newspaper.

Walk pictures will be displayed on the walk website, so anyone under eighteen will have to have a media permission slip (email for a printable version) signed by their legal gurdian.

The regestration fee is $10 which includes your 2005 walk t-shirt.

Anyone looking for printable pledge forms, registration forms, media forms and any questions or comments should post here or email me at tysgirl263@aol.com

Any other information about the walk please visit:

hey there [Sep. 8th, 2005|01:06 pm]

[mood |curiouscurious]

ok, so i have a problem and some questions for you guys. i currently go to columbia in chicago, and boy what a mistake that was! it is not only too far from home, but the classes are disgustingly easy and though this school prides itself on being a liberal environment, i was the victim of a hate crime in my own room. i am getting out of here ASAP.

i am looking up transfer info for places, but i needed to know some things about pc that aren't quite so clear to me. first of all, i know it's a religious environment, so how prevailent is religion in student life and in the education? also, i know you guys have shepard for gay students, so i was wondering how accepting of a place pc was for alternative life style kids? i heard it was pretty much like going anywhere else as far as acceptance goes. two more questions now. how is the financial aid? also, how would you guys rate the english major and the women's studies minor? oops, i lied, one more; what are my chances as a transfer?

thanks so much and have a good one guys!
